MEET JOHN
Maitland Mayor John Lowndes is a native Central Floridian with a long career of serving his community. John graduated from Edgewater High School, earned degrees from both the University of Florida and Florida State, and went on to become an attorney specializing in public interest and healthcare law. He and his wife Julie raised their three children in Maitland after having lived and worked in both Alaska and Washington, D.C.
John was elected to the Maitland City Council in 2013 and, after two terms, was elected Mayor in 2021. His calm and practical approach to leadership has allowed him to build consensus on even polarizing issues without drama or politics. That approach guided major community investments, including a new public library, downtown revitalization and long-term planning to manage growth responsibly.
John approaches public service with a simple philosophy: listen carefully, understand the problem, and work collaboratively to find practical solutions. He is known for being accessible, responsive, and deeply committed to the community he serves.
Now, John is running for State Senate to bring that same practical, solutions-oriented leadership to Tallahassee, focusing on lowering costs, solving the insurance crisis, raising wages, and restoring a more balanced, respectful approach to government.
Policy Priorities
Lowering Costs
John Lowndes is focused on practical solutions to bring down the rising cost of living, housing, healthcare, utilities, and everyday expenses that are putting pressure on families. He will work to lower costs, cut wasteful spending and stop Tallahassee politicians from opening your wallet to special interest groups. John will make sure working families and seniors aren’t the ones stuck footing the bill.
Fixing Florida’s Property Insurance Crisis
John will work to bring down property insurance costs that have become unaffordable for too many homeowners. He supports holding insurance companies accountable, increasing transparency in rate-setting, and championing reforms that reduce premiums and protect families from unpredictable spikes.
Protecting Seminole County’s Rural Boundary
John supports responsible growth that strengthens communities without sacrificing what makes them special. He will fight to protect Seminole County’s rural boundary, preserving natural and public lands, water resources, and the quality of life that defines Central Florida. Tallahassee politicians – including the state senator now representing Seminole – have put the development bullseye on this area. John will fight to keep the eastern part of the County rural.
Strengthening Public Education
John believes that all of our children deserve to go to school in a safe environment where they have the resources they need to thrive. Instead of diverting billions of our tax dollars to unaccountable corporate-run schools, he will bring that funding back to our public schools to ensure our students, parents, and teachers have what they need to provide the high-quality public education our families deserve.
Protecting Local Communities
John believes decisions should be made as close to the people as possible. He will fight efforts by the state to override local governments and instead support empowering communities to address their own needs effectively.
